The open-pit Detour Lake operation is the largest gold producing mine in Canada with the country's largest gold mineral reserves. It has a mine life into the 2050s.

Located within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt, the mine was originally owned by Placer Dome and operated primarily as an underground mine from 1987 to 1990. Production resumed in 2013 as an open-pit mine under the ownership of Detour Gold Corporation. Agnico Eagle acquired its interest in the Detour Lake mine on February 8, 2022, via the merger of equals with Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd.

Ore is processed using a conventional crushing, grinding, gravity, cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp processing facility to recover gold.

Highlights

  • The Company continues to advance various optimization initiatives, with a target to increase mill throughput to 79,450 tpd (equivalent to 29 Mtpa) by 2030.
  • In June 2024, on the basis of a new technical study reflecting the potential for a concurrent underground operation at Detour Lake, the Company approved a 2-km exploration ramp, which will provide access for underground conversion and expansion drilling and to collect a bulk sample from the shallow mineralized zone west of the pit. The underground project is accelerating access to higher grade ore and could potentially increase average annual production to approximately 1 million ounces over 14 years starting in 2030.
  • In 2025, drilling continued to delineate a subset of the mineral resources that is amenable to underground mining within and adjacent to the open pit mineral resource. At year-end 2025, this high-grade mineralized corridor increased substantially relative to the June 2024 technical study to 5.5 million ounces of gold in indicated mineral resources (85.8 million tonnes grading 2.00 g/t gold) and 5.8 million ounces of gold in inferred mineral resources (89.8 million tonnes grading 2.02 g/t gold).
